A Q&A with one of our graduates:
Why did you choose HPN?
I have attended a couple of CNA events in recent years and Cliff has been a guest speaker. I enjoyed his presentations and wanted to learn more about performance nutrition. Also two of my classmates from Wellpark had just graduated from the HPN program and recommended this course as a great post grad option.
What did you get out of the HPN course/ why would you recommend it others?
The benefits from doing this course have been immense! Not only do I utilise the website applications but the diet prescriptions in this course are often the cornerstone of my menu plans for clients. This course also gave me the opportunity to enhance my knowledge of nutritional biochemistry. The assessments were also a valuable monitoring tool for myself and my clients. I also really enjoyed researching material for my literature review. Perhaps the most valuable “resource” is Cliff himself, his workshops were a great way to further understand key concepts of the course. I have also found him very approachable, and his advice has helped me with some of my more challenging clients.
What was your background experience in nutrition?
I have a Clinical Nutrition Diploma from Wellpark graduating 2012. I had been working with clients prior to enrolling in course. I was also taking some cooking classes: I am a current registered member of the CNA. In 2013 and 2014 I was involved in a voluntary program “Food for Life” a Prema Clinic initiative.
What are you up to now as a graduate of HPN?
HPN has given me the confidence to be an educator.
In the last 18 months I have given nutrition talks and presentations to schools, sports teams and dance Studios. For example this week , I gave a talk to year 13 Biology students, relating the biochemistry of particular body systems to nutrition. Education is my passion and I feel these particular platforms are a great way to “spread the word”
My follow up business has also grown, I find that my clients have more confidence in my abilities to facilitate positive change in their lifestyles.
I also am becoming increasingly involved with “healthy catering “ at particular events.
What's does your ideal day off entail?
Spending time with my family at the beach, walking in the outdoors, a meal out . I also love to try and sneak in a yoga class.
What is your favourite way to nourish your body and what is your biggest food weakness?
I just love food ! It varies, I sometimes enjoy a beautiful fresh raw salad and veges, I adore Thai and Mexican food.
I also enjoy light raw sweet desserts occasionally , made with a variety of fresh clean ingredients.. I am also a fan of hearty winter casseroles and soups this time of year. I really enjoy a weekend brunch particularly at a great café. In fact I love eating out ! Any excuse to try new foods and flavours.
I adore cheese and often will indulge in quite a “substantial “ serving. Am in heaven when a cheese board is put in front of me and given half a chance will scoff the lot ! I guess that is a bit of a weakness!!
I love coffee, two shots a day with soy milk is my crutch! Would probably have more if it didn’t affect my sleep patterns so much.
What does your weekly fitness routine consist of?
I walk my dog every morning for an hour, I would also try a variety of yoga classes normally 5-6 /week.
Favourite piece of nutritional advice?
Eat with love !! Take the time to enjoy your food, your digestive system will thank you for it.
